Alla Prima - Acrylic Demo 1
“Alla Prima” means ‘To the first’ in Italian, or as we use the phrase in painting “all in one go”. With oil paints, that means that the painting has one layer of wet paint and is completed in one “wet” session, not worked on over time. While completing a painting in one session with acrylics is easy, it’s nearly impossible to paint it in one wet layer, unless it’s really small, or some sort of a retarder is used. The nature of acrylic paint is that nearly every brushstroke is dry before the next one goes down, depending on humidity, wind and temperature. So how do I paint alla prima when using acrylic paints? In this video I will show you some of the techniques and methods I employ to achieve a fresh, unlabored painting in one session.
Along with this video you'll receive a .pdf file listing all of my materials and thoughts about painting alla prima with acrylics.
The video is available for you to download and watch at your leisure for as long as you want to.
